He has received Sangeet Prabhakar, senior and junior diplomas in sitar from Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Allahabad. He pursued a Master in Music (instrumental) from MDU, Rohtak and learnt theatre music from Late Shri. Bhaskar Chandravarkar. His Sitar sparkles with the rare combination of virtuosity with technical finesse and a deep sense of aesthetics. His music also reflects the eternal essence of Sitar. Born in Patna (Bihar), he has grown up in a musical atmosphere since his birth. He is a disciple of world renowned Sitar Maestro, Pandit Debu Chanduri Padma Bhushan Awardee. As a child, he was also trained by "Shri Ashish Chatterjee" of Patna. Today, Uma Shankar Ji stands tall in the musical pantheon like the young, handsome Colossus. His graceful style and intricate technique echo the finest masters of the past. His nimble fingers produce rich tones and melodious phrases that distinguish his style. His skillful fingers handle rapidly moving passages with ease, while maintaining integrity and beauty of every note, the mark of a true virtuoso. Each performance demonstrates masterful handling of his instrument, displaying grace, fluidity and dexterity. After exploring and experimenting successfully with fusion, cross-over music, world music, or jugalbandi concerts in India and abroad, Uma Shanker Ji received rave reviews. He has also experimented with and performed with Rajasthani folk instruments like Khartaal, Nakkara, Dholak, Ilgoja & Matka. He has also given an extremely successful Duet with Santoor, Sarangi, Flute and Violin with many reputed artists of the country. He was awarded the Bismillah Khan Yuva Award from the Government of Bihar in 2013. He received a certificate from the U.S. department of bureau of education and cultural affairs for promoting mutual understanding between India and the United States through the support of NSLT program. He was granted a National Scholarship by the Human Resource Department of India. He also received Sangeet Kala Nidhi Samman from Patna Institute of Music at Ustaad Zakir Hussain Memorial Music Festival. He has toured extensively throughout the world as a solo artist as well as an accompanist. To name a few they include countries like the United States of America, Canada, England, Germany, Austria, Belgium, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Taiwan, Singapore, Denmark, Saudi Arabia, Iceland, Thailand, Europe and Philippines. In addition to numerousrous performances throughout the world, Uma Shankar Ji is known for his ability to conduct and playback theatre music, which makes him an exceptionally skilled performer. He taught theatre music and composed around 200 pieces of music for different plays.
